Nymphaea rubra is native to South and South-East Asia, and Australasia; introduced to South America, including Guyana and Brazil. It occurs in shallow lakes, marshes, and ponds. A floating perennial herb. Leaves are floating, ovate to orbiculate, glabrous, with dentate or sinuate margins; green or purple-green. Flowers are large (ca. 15 cm in diameter), in long peduncles, up to 20 cm above the water; reddish brown sepals, and pink to wine-red petals; open during the day. Seeds globose. Sometimes considered synonymous with Nymphaea pubescens.
